A New York man who broke into a neighbor’s home to save a dog from an out-of-control house fire should be hailed as a hero for his brave act. Instead, he’s sitting in a jail cell because there was no fire and he was hallucinating on LSD.

Police say 43-year-old Michael Orchard had mixed LSD with cough syrup and was hallucinating that his neighbor’s house on fire. He first ran around the neighborhood banging on doors trying to get people to help, but when no one offered to assist him in saving people from an imaginary house fire, he got in his car and crashed through the neighbor’s fence.

Then he smashed through their sliding glass doors and ran out with the family’s dog. When police arrived at the scene, they found Orchard on the front lawn heroically holding the dog in his arms.

Officers arrested him and charged him with burglary and criminal mischief. The dog was unharmed.
